6 Reasons to Road Trip Puerto Rico

It was easy to fall in love with Puerto Rico. It could have been the turquoise water, the white sand, the ocean breeze, or the glowing water. This isn’t a selfish love, though. This is a share with the world love. I want everyone to visit Puerto Rico. This is my way of screaming from the rooftops. PUERTO RICO IS AMAZING! And I have 6 reasons and 6 photos to convince you to road trip Puerto Rico.

Also, if you live in the United States, Puerto Rico is absurdly accessible. No passport or money exchange required, and most people speak English. Yet it feels like a more exotic trip than if you were to fly to Florida.

Doing a road trip Puerto Rico allows you to drive around and see more of the island. There are SO MANY cool spots to check out.

Here are my 6 reasons to road trip Puerto Rico:

#1 : THE BEACHES

The whole perimeter of an island is beach, which means if you’re on a small island like Puerto Rico, you have access to SO MANY different beaches. You can beach hop or find one you adore and park your butt there for the entire day. Some have restaurants and facilities. Some are secluded and nature-y. The opportunities are endless. And did I mention that they are SO beautiful?

If you’re doing a road trip Puerto Rico, try to find routes that keep you near the ocean. That way, if you see a beach you like, you can just pull over and check it out.

This is Buyé Beach, one of the many beach options.

#2 : It is so easy to hop between towns on a road trip Puerto Rico.

The drive from one side of the island to the other is only a few hours, which makes it easy to experience different parts of Puerto Rico in one trip. This also makes for epic road trips. Plan your own adventure, stop at little coffee shops or black sand beaches, and experience the whole island. San Juan will most likely be your starting point, and it is a city worth relishing before you head out on your road trip.

The main city is San Juan, which has many idyllic, colorful homes and shops.

#3 : There is such a variety of geography and landscapes.

Puerto Rico has beaches, mountains, caves, rainforest, deserts, ocean, and rivers. You can see all of these in one day if you want. Not that I could ever get sick of the beach, but the different views keep travel here exciting.

#4 : The people are so nice.

Everyone was helpful, accommodating, and kind. On our last night, I desperately wanted to make it to the beach for sunset. The beach was gated, and we couldn’t figure out how to get in. The neighbor to our Airbnb gave us his whole set of keys so we could catch the sunset.. he just asked that we return them when we got back.

The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats give a unique backdrop for photos.

#5 : Experiencing a bioluminescent bay is one of the coolest things you can do.

Seriously. The water glimmers, glows, sparkles. Puerto Rico has 3 bioluminescent bays. Currently, the one in Parguera is the best one to see because it wasn’t damaged at all from Hurricane Maria. It is MAGICAL and worth a visit to Puerto Rico just for this.

It’s easiest to get to Parguera by car, so this is a MUST on a road trip Puerto Rico.

#6 : Everything is beautiful.

Everything from the ocean views, the colorful towns, the lush rainforest, the drives along the beach, the glowing water, and the beautiful souls of the people we encountered.
