Adventure to Twin Falls at Rock Island State Park

1 hour and 40 minutes from Nashville

Steps from your car or a 1 mile hike

The Twin Falls at Rock Island State Park were oddly difficult to see. Not because the hike was difficult but because the map and explanation of how to hike to them were very unclear. Don’t worry, I’ll get you to these pretty falls.

Twin Falls Hike

You have 2 options when visiting majestic Twin Falls. Here is your map.

Difficult option: You can park near the Historic Cotton Mill and hike to the bottom of the falls from here. We actually started out this way and thought we were on the wrong trail. You will hike down some steps then follow a not well-marked trail to the right. If you reach a tiny waterfall on your left, you have gone too far. Go to the right-ish until you reach an area that looks like you are on the moon. You can follow the dry, rocky area along the river until you reach the base of the falls. It is best if you are on the right side of the river.

Easy option: Park near the Upstream Trail at the end of Powerhouse Road and hike down a bit from here. You will reach the overlook rather quickly.

The Twin Falls are massive and really beautiful. They stream out from the trees, which seems magical. The 80 foot falls are not “natural” falls; they exist because of the dam. Nevertheless, they are impressive to see.

Rock Island State Park

Rock Island State Park boasts a swimming beach, camping, fishing, kayaking, and hiking trails if you want to do more than just see the Twin Falls. This is the best website I have found for the hiking trails.

We did the lollipop Downstream Trail that is 1.55 miles round trip. I have friends who have jumped from the cliffs on this trail, but it can be dangerous.

Heed the siren warnings. There is a dam, and it can open, causing a large influx of water. This can be particularly dangerous if you are in the water. Be careful if you are hiking on low rocks near the river as well.

The siren was going off the day we were there. It was definitely loud and alarming enough to keep us from swimming.

All in all, it is worth a day trip to Rock Island State Park to witness the Twin Falls. Pack a picnic to eat on the big rocks near the falls and enjoy!
